Dr. Gray's Legacy
Dr. Gray impacted her state. In 1967, she was chosen as the Alabama Association of Women's Clubs Inc. & Youth Affiliates (AAWYC) President from 1967-1971. This association of clubs' goal is to reach out-reach down, and lift up, to serve the community, and to promote young adults, girls and boys. Dr. Gray's presidential term ended in 1971. The AAWYC, headquartered in Lower Peach Tree, Alabama bears her name.
Dr. Gray showed civic leadership nation wide by serving as the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs (NAWC) president from 1984- 1988. The purpose of the organization is securing the rights of women, children, and families. The NAWC is the oldest women of color organizations in the country.
She received over 50 community service awards. Moreover, Dr.Gray was honored with the Lifetime Distinguished Service Award from the AAWYC, inducted in the Tuscaloosa Civic Hall of Fame in 2008, awarded with the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority's Woman of the Year Award, Teacher of the Year, and countless other accomplishments. She is the epitome of "lifting as we climb." |
